I understand that news organizations are having hard time in this digital era, and I understand that making it difficult to for the customer to cancel may be a tempting short-term solution, but The Mercury News goes too far, like a lot: (1) There's no refunds - could be understandable - so you can enjoy 6 more months of the service (2) You can remove "autopay" from the subscription, but the subscription would continue to auto-renew, they would just send you an invoice after-the-fact (3) With 6 months remaining in your subscription, you can't request for a future cancellation at the end of your term, only at the day you call (so I ended up with setting a calendar reminder 6 months forward) (4) To rub it in, 3 days prior to the end of the term it was suddenly possible to cancel at a future day, i.e. 3 days forward, so apparently (3) was just a play on probability of people forgetting to cancel (5) Icing on the cake is the customer service page has with this "Arbitration and Refund Policy" prominently presented
