A story of audacity meeting courage. Today I was at Sarvam AI's launch event. Going in I was a little skeptical about Sarvam's AI play in the model space. I was under the impression that the Open AI for India will be Open AI, and not Sarvam or Krutrim.

But I am so glad to have been proven wrong. We got a front-row view of the entire suite of models, APIs, agents and product workflows on offer. For tasks related to regional language understanding and synthesis, it outperformed all other LLM's by a significant factor.

What stood out for me was their 2B parameter, small language model. Just its speed and accuracy were off the charts.

I'll write a longer post on small language models later.

But I'm glad to say my thesis of the Open AI for India being Open AI, has been shaken by the Sarvam AI product demo.

Also glad to have met a bunch of my Antler friends at the event. Anurag Ram Chandran Pulkit Goyal Himanshu Sanghi.

Thanks for the invite Sheetal Chauhan

Here’s a career update. Earlier this year, I decided to part ways with Fleek.

Since then, I’ve been on a search to find a mission that I can dedicate myself to.

Being born into an Army family meant we were posted to small places without the best schools. That coupled with ADHD meant that my childhood was punctuated with bad grades and a general disinterest towards learning.

When I was 18, was the first time I got access to regular internet. And for the first time, I was able to enjoy learning. I would spend hours going down the rabbit hole and digging deeper into obscure topics that would fascinate me. I felt that every problem had a great article out there.

The debt of any knowledge or success I have today has to be attributed to all those writers who were writing and publishing their thoughts on the internet.

However, high-quality content on the internet may be in its last few years.

But why?

Content publishers and discovery platforms like Facebook previously had a symbiotic relationship. Users found content through Facebook, visited publisher websites and were shown targeted ads. This arrangement created a win-win-win scenario for publishers, platforms, and advertisers.

This is what made writing a sustainable full-time profession.

With user ad-tracking coming to an end, advertisers cannot effectively target users on publishers’ websites and are reducing their ad spend. The result of this is that many publishers who depend on advertising revenue have had to shut down. The best example is BuzzFeed News.

The ones that didn’t shut shop moved to a model where they charged readers directly via subscriptions. However, most writers barely make a living with this new model. An average Substack writer today makes only $250/ year. That’s over a 99% dip in their earnings.

If we don’t solve this, all that we’ll be left with is machine-generated content on the internet. In a certain sense, the information diet on the internet is under serious threat.

Narendra and I got together earlier this year to take on this mission. “ Improve the information diet of the internet”.

Our company is called “Flex”. We plan to help content creators “Flex” their work.

Today, we are launching the 1st version of our product. It’s a tool that helps writers take their articles and convert them to short-form such as carousels. Writers can just paste their article and we synthesize it and convert it to short-form content in literally 15 seconds. https://letsflex.me/

In a world where we discover all our content through reels & carousels. Somewhere long-form content gets lost. Flex is a start to help writers get their content discovered on social.  We'll continue to build and help writers solve for distribution

Today is quite literally Day 1 in our journey to “Improve the information diet of the internet”.If you love to write or know people who do write. Please comment or tag them, and help us spread the word.
