My first Cannes was in my 40s.

Fashioanbly late, some might say. After waiting for over two decades for it, finally I was there. It was interesting, but not quite what I expected. Here’s my attempt to debunk its myth in my own head.

The Cannes Lions you think of is in (1) The Palais and what I call (2) The Pockets.

The Palais is where Cannes Lions began. This is where the eyes go wide with worldwide creativity. Young and veterans creatives from all over the world, in one little building. So many cultures, but only one language. Being amongst this all this global talent has the power to make you fall in love advertising, all over again.

The Pockets are all the little cafes, terraces and corners around the city where exciting grassroots talks and subculture panels are being held. Because of the smaller size and audiences truly passionate about what’s being discussed, the pockets become hot beds for great conversation, debate and learning. Here is where you feel something truly new is being born.

Now, the Palais and the pockets only make 25% of the entire festival.

All the big beaches are taken over by media channels and their big media castles, making it feel like a corporate glamrock show. Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow was there. Yes, John Legend was there. Yes, Will.I.Am was there. But all of them selling their products hard and fast, whether it be beauty, tech or just themselves.

I know it’s really easy to diss Cannes Lions for what it has become.

But its heart, although only 1/4th of its mass, is still alive and kicking. A big shout out to Simon Cook for keeping it safe, subculture champions like Asad Dhunna for keeping it warm and global creatives like YOU for keeping it beating.

You might not like it, yet there is nowhere like it 🦁
