We’re VERY fortunate to live in California, where there are of free resources and services are available for kids who have experienced severe health trauma like Raphael
This of course means I spend endless hours scanning documents, submitting applications, and taking phone calls
Yesterday I got a call to schedule an interview for an occupational therapy program
When I was asked if I was Raphael and Antonia’s foster mom
I’d love to say this is the first time something like this has happened, but unfortunately it’s not
I’ve been asked at Raphael’s bedside if I was his aunt
Or a cousin
Or if I was a friend of his moms
One of his surgeries was even interrupted - literally someone bursting into the room mid operation yelling “HANDS OFF THAT BABY” - because compliance wanted to know:
“Who is this person who signed the consent form?”
I’m so grateful for the tremendous love and care Raphael has received along his journey as a cardiac kid
But being a gay parent, especially the non-birthing parent, even in 2024, is such a challenge
While most of the time it doesn’t get me down
Sometimes it just does
We’ve been through so much together as a family
I wish it wasn’t so outside of peoples mines that some kids have two mommies 🙃

The Cedars Pediatric ICU serves the newborns, toddlers, children, pre-teens, and teenagers in the hospital who need the most highly intensive care
