Highlights
Yesterday I had the delightful opportunity to grab lunch with a former startup mentor from the Jumpstart days who I hadn’t seen in about a decade. We talked about our families, careers, academic experiences, work-life balance, lessons learned over the past ten years, and the power of cultivating habits. I left with a fresh outlook for the rest of the week! Thanks for chatting with me - you know who you are - and to my LinkedIn friends, if there’s someone out there that you’ve been meaning to catch up with, let this be your sign to reach out and make it happen 🎉
Stepped off the beaten path a few weeks ago for a trip up Mt. Baker in Washington with my dad!
I’d never been camping before. I’d practiced marching my 90L pack up and down hills, but I forgot about the food and the water weight and the heavy alpine gear so it was WAY heavier than I had expected. I also had no idea Mt. Baker was an active volcano, and I’d missed the memo that we’d be doing crevasse rescue training in an actual crevasse, on an actual glacier. But there I was, camping for a week on the side of a volcano. Surprise!!!
Physically, it was the hardest thing I’ve done (and I used to run ultramarathon distances every Sunday, although I am not that fit at the moment, lol). Someone in the group mentioned the Japanese concept of misogi: a physical challenge so intense that it resets the way you look at life. This trip was certainly that for me.
I’ve been struggling with getting back to my old self for a while. Personal tragedies, injuries, and COVID sort of snowballed on each other for a few years there, and I felt like I’d lost my mojo. I think what I finally realized (or maybe just accepted) while slogging back down the mountain is that I will never be my old self again. It’s just not going to happen, and that’s okay. But maybe I can be something better than that if I keep showing up and putting 110% into whatever adventure, wild or mundane, I find myself in.
Now I’m just looking for my next misogi…
