What a fantastic profile of one of our most deserved and important Singaporeans. Thai Ker was someone I knew growing up through my father. He was then Chairman of the National Arts Council when I ran visual arts and literary arts there so I got to work closely with him. He was at the time the sole champion on the Board for literature, which sadly was treated like an orphan art form by the organization. He and his wife Gretchen have both contributed so much and really do deserve this kind of global recognition, and especially the respect of so many young Singaporeans who may have no idea who they are.
Great piece by Sui-Lee Wee.
(Not a Tatler article but I don't believe in gatekeeping great content)
"I came from a broken home. My father went to jail. We struggled to make ends meet... My mother sent me to work as a textile salesman, earning $150 a month, which was a lot of money for us. Rent back then was $17 a month. After a few months of working as a salesman, I got a letter inviting me to go for an interview for the President’s Scholarship. And then I got the President’s Scholarship. And it was going to give me $250 a month. It was more money than I’d make being a salesman, so my mother said, ‘You go to university.’ And that’s how I ended up in university, completely by accident. If I hadn’t received the scholarship, I’d never have gone to university.”
Another article for Tatler Asia that I very much enjoyed doing this month. It was an honour and pleasure to chat with Kishore Mahbubani about his life; his political opinions on Singapore, ASEAN, the US and China; on taking risks; and his upcoming memoir that I can't wait to read.
