The internet created many things that job seekers hate:

• Online applications

• Applicant Tracking Systems

• Automated rejections

But the internet also created a few other things:

• Social platforms where anyone can have a voice

• Free tools for anyone to express their creativity and value

• Networks where people could connect with anyone around the world

As a job seeker, you choose where you focus your energy.

You can focus on the negatives of what the internet created (that’s what most job seekers do).

Or you can invest in the opportunities it's created.

Don’t have enough experience?

• Commit to any of the free courses from experts in your target field

• Freelance your skills using any widely available freelance platform

No one’s recognizing your value?

• Start sharing it on a social platform or blog

• Make a video, create a website, or draft up case studies and publish them online

Don’t have anyone in your network?

• Use Google and social media to learn about anyone you want to connect with

• Then use LinkedIn to engage with them

Moral of the story?

You can complain or you can create.

The choice is yours.

PSA: Companies only care about one thing when it comes to hiring.

They want to find the person who shows they understand the role and can deliver the most value.

That’s it.

Problem is, most of the things job seekers do aren’t aligned with that.

Job seekers keep investing in activities that don’t help them achieve that goal.

You’re not getting rejected because:

You used horizontal lines or blue font on your resume.

You didn’t have all of the right keywords on your resume.

Your cover letter was 4 paragraphs instead of 5.

You wore the blue top instead of the white blouse to your interview.

You’re getting rejected because you’re not seeing the forest through the trees.

You’re caught up in minutiae that distracts from the real goal.

Here’s the thing.

There are no hard and fast rules in the job search.

There’s just one goal:

Show the hiring team that you understand the role better than anyone else and that you have a plan to deliver massive value.

How you do that is up to you!

But one thing’s for sure.

If you’re trying to do it using the same strategies as everyone else?

It’s going to be incredibly hard to stand out.
