Unless you are exercising your privilege to look away, you know that the daily images coming out of Gaza are pure horror. A US military historian has called it “one of the most intense civilian punishment campaigns in history”. The Palestinians have been so dehumanized in mainstream media and by the West that they must livestream their own slaughter so the world can believe them and make it stop. It’s day 80 and we haven’t made it stop. As Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporetur puts it: “Genocide is a process, not a single act. It must be prevented but in Gaza - as in Sebrenica and Rwanda before - the world is just letting it happen.” I am left speechless by those who continue to justify this as “war”. We agree that Oct 7 was an atrocity, but we refuse to extend the same reasoning to every day since and every day before. We show humanity for the 39 children killed on Oct 7, but not for the almost 10,000 children killed in Gaza since. How can we respond to evil by responding with far greater evil in return? These children's lives are not worth less than the lives of children born anywhere else in the world. Not worth less than the life of my child. Not worth less than the lives of yours. We would never accept this kind of indiscriminate bombing to happen around us, even if we were surrounded by terrorists. It cannot be justified to enforce this on the Palestinians. If human rights are not universal, then no one is safe. This genocidal war is not making anyone safer. Not Israelis and certainly not Palestinians. Not Jews and not Muslims as we see a rise in both antisemitism and Islamophobia worldwide. We must not stop talking about Gaza. If we are silent, we are complicit. For the sake of our shared humanity, we must speak up. Ceasefire now. Views are my own. Antisemitic and Islamophobic comments will be deleted.
