At DuckDuckGo we've been working as a fully distributed team since well before the pandemic (since forever!). I spoke to Barbara Bermes about some of the practices that help us deliver a great product to our tens of millions of users, and to run our business generally. We do some unusual things, and I go pretty deep into the details -- I hope they inspire others to try new ways of working, and ultimately to make better decisions faster!
At DuckDuckGo we chiefly organize around several key objectives rather than traditional teams.
“Objectives” are the most important things we think we need to do in pursuit of our mission: to show the world that protecting privacy is simple. They are relatively fluid, evolving or ending as we hit diminishing returns or learn something important.
This structure has all sorts of implications for how we work. Team members — including the Product team — plug in wherever they can best be of service, sometimes leading projects, sometimes leading objectives, advising projects and objectives and other team members, etc… Decisions about what gets done and who does it are both open (anyone can contribute ideas and opinions) and held to a high standard of reasoning in the context of our vision, mission, and objectives (it’s not a free-for-all, do-what-strikes-you).
