Highlights
I'm late in updating my job status but, I joined the awesome team @ Contentful in June of this year as Principal Product Manager for the company's Ecosystem product line.
I'm excited to be back in the PM seat and so far my experience at Contentful has been fantastic! That being said, it's been a jarring shift in reality. I had very much acclimated to a very different life as a stay-at-home dad over the preceding 9 months. I rarely sat at a computer for long periods, I saw my kids tons and I could effortlessly give them my full attention, without half of my brain still thinking about some work problem. I worked in my yard lots or on craft projects of one kind or another, including but not limited to: making costumes, building garden beds, fixing the long list of tiny quirks about my house that have vexed me for years, working on a micro startup, actually walking my dog as much as I should, mountain biking in the middle of the day, and of course, laundry, dishes, and all manner of children cleanup.
And again, I really do love product work, it is very challenging, satisfying, and fun. That's an amazing list of things to get to say professionally. And yet, I can't help but reflect on these last few months and find myself asking... what are we doing? Like as a species. Why do we insist on gruelingly long workweeks that stretch every parent to their limits to keep up with the demands of profession, family, and self? Why, when we've seen thousands of amazing technological breakthroughs in productivity that drive essentially perpetual growth in GDP, have we not realized improvements in our work/life balance as the fruit of all this economic growth and technological advancement? In 1938, yes... nineteen thirty eight. The Fair Labor and Standards act was passed that created the 40-hr work week. Since then, we've never reduced the national standard for how many hours/week a person should work. Despite renown economist John Maynard Keynes' prediction from 1930 that we'd be working 15 hrs/week by now, we are still sitting pretty at 40 hrs/week as the national standard. I'll grant, that I'm simplifying a complex topic here, there is a case to be made that we live longer and thus spend more time in retirement, and thus work less as predicted. But not nearly enough, and not at the right phase of life I'd argue! And while technology and our modern way of life has given us a great many gifts: knowledge, digital connection, choice, it also comes with prices: posture, mental freedom, peace.
I've obviously digressed heavily from my "I got a job!" post, but ya know, reflection... :magic: I do think something is amiss with how much we work. Though I'd be remiss to fail to mention that over the last few years there have been a whole host of 32-hr work week trials across the world, that have been incredibly successful. And similarly, Rep Mark Takano introduced the "Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act" to the house in 2023. So ya know... 🤞 one day...
