A decade ago Brazil was considered a second-tier surfing nation. Blessed with a long coastline, but mostly without the same quality of waves as Australia, Hawaii, California or the Pacific. With a large population, but lower income than Australia and the US, it’s surfers were always present on the world tour, but rarely challenging for world titles.

In the last decade this has changed. Going from zero world titles in 2013, to likely 5 (maybe 6!) In the next few days, and a general dominance of professional surfing, Brazil is the sleeping surf giant that has now awoken. With dominance on competitive (and Olympic) surfing driven by the Brazilian Storm, and explosive growth in surfing participation in the country to an estimated greater number of surfers than any other country on earth, Brazil is now THE country of surfing. Documentaries such as this one by the World Surf League about the rise of Brazilian surfing are testament to this.

The change in the importance of surfing in Brazil is slowly bringing more investment to the sport (though not fast enough), and very slowly bringing much needed structure to the sports organisation in the country.

With this change, Brazil will become a hotspot for wave pools and surf parks over the coming decades, which will in turn bring the sport of surfing and all of its benefits to an even wider population, and bring more structure to athlete development and competition in the country.

Before December 2014, Australia held the record for most world titles in the men’s competitor surfing at 20. Brazil had 0. Seven years later, Australia still has the record at 20, but Brazil in the coming days will likely confirm #5. And we hope many to come in women’s surfing, potentially with the first next week.

The future is bright. For Brazilian surfing, this is still Day 1.

Let’s share the stoke.
