For many years I helped a local non-profit called SMYAL with their annual brunch videos, working with at-risk LGBT youth and helping them tell their stories. Many years ago one of my kids was Jerome (who is now known as Jzhara since her transition). Earlier today I learned that Jzhara passed this weekend. I'm moved by the resilience I have seen over the years from SMYAL youth, but Jzhara was special. Today I post the work we made together so that you know she existed, but also to encourage you to donate to her burial fund, as was requested by those close to her. I still help SMYAL with their annual staff video and believe more than ever that the work they do in the DMV area is heroic and necessary. Please consider them in your annual giving. Tickets for the Fall Brunch are also now available.

In July I filmed a multitude of development projects in a few African countries. One of the most powerful experiences I had was visiting Cidade Velha in Cabo Verde, which was an export point for the slave trade. I've been to Congo Square in New Orleans many times, where slaves were bought and sold, and where Jazz, R&B and Rock and Roll were born from the sounds of enslaved musicians who incorporated uptown sounds into their African rhythms. Yet relatively few people have traveled the dirt road up to the fort that overlooks this African town, completing the loop between these two distant places. Emotionally, it was an overwhelming experience, particularly as I considered the magnitude of suffering. I hope that more tourism development can take place here, particularly so that black folks in the USA might one day close the same loop. I was there so briefly because of flight delays so my footage isn't great, but I think it's still worth sharing with you.
