Hi, my Project Team colleagues and I are raising funds for Glass Door this Christmas as part of our 'Merry Movement-NNG' initiative to move (walk, bike, run) more during the month of December.
The idea behind the charity is that for most days and nights of the week, churches are completely empty. So to make use of the churches during the ‘idle’ period, volunteers from the local area (of all faiths, non-faiths and backgrounds) come together in the church hall, cook a meal, serve the guests, eat and speak with the guests and then leave the guests (supported by the Glass Door Case Workers) to sleep in a warm church overnight.
I have volunteered with the Charity over the past 3 years, cooking, serving and speaking with the guests. From my conversations with the different guests, I can tell you that ‘one of us’ could become homeless if we did not have a support network and in fact, some guests arrive late to the shelter as they return ‘home’ from work that day.
