Side Hustles and the Search for the Right Tech Role: A Personal Story
As many of us in tech know, the higher you climb in your career, the fewer roles there are available—and finding the right opportunity takes time. Right now, I’m still in the midst of that search, looking for the right fit in Tech/Saas/ Professional Services management. It's a journey that requires patience, perseverance, and sometimes, a bit of creativity.
In the meantime, like many others, I’ve been exploring side hustles that keep me engaged and contribute to my community without pulling me away from my primary career goals. During COVID, I got certified and background checked for the roles of substitute teacher and food services worker in my kids’ school district to help out when teachers and staff needed to take a break. This morning, I got a call to return to the kitchen as a last minute sub in a local elementary school. I said yes.
This work reminded me of the importance of staying connected to the community and being open, even when life takes unexpected turns. The experience was action-packed, full of multitasking, physically demanding and, honestly, pretty wet & dirty. The day flew by. The kids were great, the food (hamburgers, cheeseburger 😉& veggie burritos) looked good, and the kitchen team was fantastic—never a dull moment. My willingness to learn new things quickly and take direction from the pros made it so I was able to carry my own weight. But - seriously - I am going to be ridiculously sore tonight!!
This experience has reminded me to give a shout-out to all the hard-working people out there hustling and side hustling, finding ways to keep moving forward while searching for their next big career step. Whether you're teaching, cooking, consulting, driving uber eats or doing whatever it takes to make ends meet, your resilience and adaptability are what make you stronger.
Here’s to everyone out there hustling—you’re not alone. Keep going, keep grinding, and trust that the right opportunity is out there, even if it takes time to find.
And if you have a hustle that has kept you going while you search for a role in your chosen career, please comment below. I want to hear about it.
