Highlights
This has been an incredible week – for me personally, and for our company. It began with our announcement of the Brilliant Earth partnership with Dr. Jane Goodall and her Institute on the TODAY Show. What an honor it was to hear Jane speak about the importance of Brilliant Earth’s Mission to transform the jewelry industry for good, all while wearing a custom Brilliant Earth pendant necklace.
On the show, Jane highlighted a focus of our Mission that has always held paramount importance to me: our commitment to creating a more circular future through recycled gold. Gold mining is one of the most destructive mining industries, and the leading cause of mercury pollution. It has devastated our ecosystems – including the Amazon rainforests, our planet’s lungs. That’s why we are so proud that 96% of our gold is recycled, and why we’re working diligently towards our goal of 100% by the end of next year. That pendant necklace made another appearance at the auction event for the Jane Goodall Institute, alongside a custom Brilliant Earth ring. Both pieces featured a rare oval tanzanite, adorned with shimmering lab grown diamonds set in recycled gold – and through their auction and our inaugural donation, we were able to contribute $240,000 to the Institute to fund critical conversation projects.
Finally, Jane’s 90th birthday this week would not have been complete without a birthday cake – and luckily for us, Brilliant Earth had the immense pleasure of throwing a party to celebrate. To join us in the festivities, we invited a group of likeminded trailblazers, activists, and disruptors using art, science, fashion, and storytelling to create a brighter future. I am personally inspired by the determination and gumption of these young leaders, including Lauren Singer, Marina Testino and Zero Waste Daniel, and it was such a joy to spend time with both them and Jane – advocates who are forging our collective future with their passion and dedication.
This week, Brilliant Earth released its third annual Mission report since becoming a public company in 2021. Alongside the release of this comprehensive report, we also published a new dedicated section on our website aimed at providing a detailed look into our mission and ongoing efforts to promote responsibility within the jewelry industry. I am so proud of the teamwork, dedication, and commitment to our Mission, and I’m excited to share more on our achievements and future aspirations heading into 2024. Among these achievements in 2023, we continued to offer more blockchain-verified natural diamonds than anyone else in the industry. We also introduced our Carbon Capture Collection, the world’s largest collection of lab grown diamonds created using carbon, captured before it is released into the atmosphere, as well as our Renewable Collection, a collection of lab grown diamonds that are grown, cut, and polished with 100% renewable energy. We made a commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative, a global collaboration of companies and organizations seeking to set science-based climate targets. As is often said, you cannot improve what you don’t measure, so for us, joining SBTi is another milestone on our journey to help reverse global climate change. Like any journey, there will be unexpected twists and turns. Public opinions might shift. Acronyms might change. But real progress requires steadfast commitment. And while we are not perfect, this commitment to our Mission -- to create a more transparent, sustainable, compassionate, and inclusive jewelry industry -- is something we’ve held dear since we started Brilliant Earth almost 20 years ago. As proud as I am of this report and the achievements and aspirations it describes, I am even more proud of our employees who make Brilliant Earth what it is, and whose belief and dedication make our Mission and our journey possible. I can’t wait to see all that they accomplish in 2024, as we continue to transform the jewelry industry.
