Statistical algorithms (such as Generative-AI, LLM, and Neural Nets) are requiring more and more GPUs/ CPUs, server farms, or supercomputers, which only a few companies and countries can afford in the future, requiring lots of energy to run those GPUs/ CPUs, and producing lots of Carbon footprint, causing more Global Warming (causing, e.g., more melting ice, more tornados, more insects, and more diseases). Therefore, it is neither sustainable nor economical. On top of it, e.g., Generative-AI is not even accurate, reproducible, or robust. So, it is a double-whammy to the power of 2. 😀 Please also see the article below: ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Here are the dangers of AI energy consumption:

The proliferation of AI and big data has created a digital "gas guzzler" effect, warns Ocient CEO Chris Galdwin-- and it's rapidly getting worse.

In today’s world, data is often heralded as the new oil, fueling everything from global financial markets to the algorithms behind our favorite apps. But just like oil, our growing dependence on data has a serious environmental cost that is too often overlooked. As the CEO of a data analytics software solutions company, I’ve had a front-row seat to witness how the explosion of AI and big data is driving an insatiable demand for computing power. The environmental toll is mounting, and it’s happening faster than most people realize.

I saw another article on the subject of Generative AI. So, my last year's prediction about Generative AI is happening now: 😀 Statistical Algorithms (e.g., Neural Net, LLM, Generative AI, and Chatbot) generally need lots of training samples, e.g., 1000s to Billions. At some point, having run out of training samples, e.g., Generative AI (knowingly/ intentionally or unknowingly/ unintentionally) may get trained on its own simulated creation or creations of the other Generative AI machines. Any small perturbation or "bias" grows exponentially in such a system, which is a disaster. In Logic, this is called "Circular Logic", which is a disaster. In System language, this is called a "positive feedback" in a system that is unstable & grows up exponentially & blows up at the end, which is a disaster. Biologically, it is similar to a situation that somebody wants to survive drinking on a liquid output filtered by his kidney (continuously feeding himself), where the liquid becomes more and more concentrated and toxic in each iteration, and thus, it is not sustainable, and therefore, it is a disaster at the end. 😀 By the way, this is one of the many reasons that Generative-AI is a unreliable and disaster. Is generative AI headed for a model collapse?

Researchers found that without high-quality human data, AI systems trained on AI-made data get dumber and dumber as each model learns from the previous one.

Artificial intelligence (AI) prophets and newsmongers are forecasting the end of the generative AI hype, with talk of an impending catastrophic “model collapse”.

Discussed in 2023, but popularised more recently, “model collapse” refers to a hypothetical scenario where future AI systems get progressively dumber due to the increase of AI-generated data on the internet.

But not just any data. The current crop of generative AI systems needs high quality data, and lots of it.

It’s like a digital version of the problem of inbreeding.
