This is a smart move in many ways. First, OpenAI is proactively paying content holder for their work, which is less expensive than defending copyright infringement litigations (New York Times). Second, and most importantly, it models the way to commercial agreements. And these agreements seem to be quite innovative.
That said, OpenAI has its haters...
Hunter Walk argues these precedents set a barrier to entry to smaller genAI companies by establishing "a high enough cost" on licensing deals for training data that would prevent innovation.
WTF??? How can doing the right thing be vilified? The alternative is paying nothing??
That's quite a stretch! It reminds of the Napster saga, where an innovative peer to peer music sharing innovation was effectively enabling copyright infringements and a loss of revenues for content owners.
