Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist

Dr. Brendan McMullan is a Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist and Microbiologist based at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, part of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. He also serves as a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Discipline of Paediatrics, at UNSW Sydney. Dr. McMullan holds a BMed (Hons), DTMH, PhD, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) .124

His research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, optimizing antibiotic use in children, infections in immunocompromised children, and congenital infections. He utilizes surveillance data to enhance antibiotic therapy and has been involved in several significant research initiatives, including clinical trials on Staphylococcus aureus infections and pediatric bone and joint infections. Dr. McMullan has also led projects aimed at reducing hospital stays for children with infections through home-based care programs .123

Dr. McMullan is actively engaged in leadership roles within his field. He is the Chair of ANZPID (the Paediatric Interest Group of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases) and Secretary of the World Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (WSPID). During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-chaired the National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce's Paediatric and Adolescent Care Panel .13

In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. McMullan is involved in teaching and supervising medical students and higher-degree candidates at UNSW Sydney .14
