It's been a few weeks since my last series of posts on being yourself. As I continue to formulate in my mind where I want my posts to go, I do know I don't want to be "political" or " religious" or any other tag someone might want to throw speech or ideas into. I don't want to give my opinion on things. I simply want to present logical ideas that would help people be successful in life. In my previous series of posts on being yourself, I did not get into any specifics, but kept it very general. Whoever you are, find someone or a company or an association or a network that will allow you to be you. The point is not to go into a group with opposite ideologies and try to change them. Take advantage of opportunities as you are presented with them, but don't go in "guns a'blazin" or you will create enemies. This brings me to my next series of posts...
LEARN TO LISTEN
Our world is very divided today, especially in the US. We are divided on politics. We are divided on religion. We are divided on law. We are divided on sex. We are divided on almost every opinion we could possibly have. The United States Constitution states "...in order to form a more perfect UNION...". I'm not sure how much further from "union" we can get. How can we change this? LEARN TO LISTEN. Most of us are great at hearing, but very few are great at listening. Listening describes an intentional activity. When you are listening, you are actively trying to hear something, using all of your senses. In contrast, hearing is something that happens without any intentional effort. You can hear something even when you don't want to hear it and don't try to hear it.
Every relationship you have will be strengthened if you can learn to listen, whether it's professional, personal, family, or any kind of relationship you might have. I will spend some time breaking this concept down in the next series of posts. In the mean time, do some self-reflection. Do you listen to others or do you just hear what they have to say? What relationships do you have that you wish were stronger? Maybe, in your next conversation with someone, you are going to think about whether you are listening, or just hearing, in which case you are not really listening. :) If you know someone who is good at listening, go to them and ask them about your listening skills.
To be continued....
