Exciting news! In a historic move, nearly a decade in the making, last week the U.S. Department of Energy launched a new national foundation in a ceremony with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, DOE Chief Commercialization Officer Vanessa Z Chan, DOE Senior Policy Advisor Karen Skelton and New Mexico State Representative Melanie Stansbury, who worked to have the bill authorizing the foundation signed into law as part of President Biden's CHIPS and Science Act.
Led by a powerhouse board of directors, this bipartisan foundation is set to support critical research and innovation, foster public-private partnerships, and drive the commercialization of breakthrough technologies essential for a clean energy future. These collaborative efforts will bolster energy security, support underrepresented groups, and foster climate resilience across the U.S.
Massive congratulations to the 13 inaugural board members who were meticulously selected, including:
- The Honorable Vicky A. Bailey Chair of United States Energy Association
- Dr. Noel Bakhtian, Director of Tech Acceleration, Bezos Earth Fund
- The Honorable Miranda Ballentine, Founding CEO of Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA)
- The Honorable Dr. Rita Baranwal, SVP Westinghouse Electric Company
- Mike Boots, Executive Vice President, Breakthrough Energy
- Dr. Mung Chiang, President Purdue University
- Noelle Laing, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Builders Initiative
- Honorable Kathleen McGinty, Chief Sustainability Officer, Johnson Controls
- Tomeka McLeod, VP Hydrogen bp
- Nancy Pfund, Founder of DBL Partners
- Stephen Pearse, Managing Director, Yucatan Rock Ventures
- Jason Walsh, Executive Director, BlueGreen Alliance

As with anything worth doing, it took a village to get here. Many have carried the baton to get this initiative off the ground, such as Jetta Wong and David M. Hart. Congrats Mary Yamada, Nick Kraus, Oriana Tannenbaum, Julius Goldberg-Lewis, and the rest of the DOE team for the amazing work!
Over past years a diverse array of external groups, including the Federation of American Scientists, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Schmidt Futures, Breakthrough Energy , SustainabiliD, The ClimateTech Association (C-TA), Bipartisan Policy Center and many others have been vocal in support via the ‘Friends of FESI’. Together, we've envisioned creating a flexible and impactful nonprofit partner for the DOE. So right after the inauguration ceremony we got straight to work, exploring ways the foundation can accelerate the work of the department.
This is just the beginning, and we are excited to see the transformative impact FESI will have in the years to come.
