Brian Whittaker is the founder of Humans of Public Service (HOPS), a non-profit, non-partisan organization that shares stories of public servants on social media platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram.5 HOPS aims to increase diversity in government through leadership and career development opportunities and to create a community of public servants.5 Whittaker is also a technology executive within the Federal government.1 He is currently the Chief Innovation Officer at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).2347
Whittaker has over 10 years of experience leading IT transformation projects across the government.7 He has held leadership positions in the General Services Administration, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.1 His projects include streamlining the farm loan application process and revamping the online submission and processing of civil rights claims.1
Whittaker started Humans of Public Service to support marginalized communities after the murder of George Floyd in 2020.3 He used his technical background to create a website where the public can nominate public servants, and then he shares their stories.3 As of May 2023, Humans of Public Service had shared over 100 stories of current public servants and gained 5,000 followers across its platforms.6
Whittaker is an Afro-Latino leader in tech who is passionate about creating a more equitable and representative government.5 He comes from a family of public servants, including his father who served in the Air Force, his mother and youngest sister who were teachers, his oldest sister who is a nurse, and another sister who is a police officer.3
