This summer my working hours have been crazy. Not my normal level of doing too much, but the crazy that comes from trying to look after 3 kids with no childcare (can't afford it) and still keep my non-profit ticking over.

I've learned a few things:

  1. When I was off I was fully off. That was critical for me to actually see my kids and actually get a bit of a break. I can't trust myself with tech, so good old-fashioned paperback books were my best friends!

  2. My breaks would not have been possible without colleagues who did not take time off and who got things done while I was out.

  3. This goes double for the help I got from my husband this year. In the past, his business (hospitality) hasn't allowed him any time off in the summer, but this year he made it work and it made all the difference. I couldn't have done it without him.

  4. Nothing went horribly wrong. Most of the people I work with were also off and because we do so much work with schools, there were a lot of things we had to put on hold anyway. I might not have got back to people as quickly as I normally do, but so far it all seems to be OK.

  5. It's made me reevaluate how much time I work and take off next year. Having the extra space to breathe gave me new ideas and helped to solidify a lot of my thoughts. It also helped me with prioritising what I get done and what isn't that important.

  6. Schedules and routines really do help me. One of the issues with jumping in and out of work is I have a lot of start-and-stop momentum. Going back to a schedule next week feels like a blessing and I'm looking forward to a routine again.

  7. I really like swimming to calm down and refocus. Must try to do it more! Someone I work with has suggested meetings in the sea. I'm not sure I'm there yet, but maybe a walking meeting and then a dip! There are some serious benefits to being based in Cornwall.

Does anyone else have any lessons from the summer juggle?

I loved Twitter. I had a following and friends. But X is making moves I can not support and do not want to be a part of.

Elon Musk is a threat to everything I value and believe in and I will not play any part in supporting him or his propaganda machine. #boycottX #boycottmusk
