The rise of Paul Skenes has been fun to watch. Equally fun to watch has been his unique method of warming up on the days he pitches.

People have commented that even they feel fatigued from watching his pre-game work.

But it wasn't long ago (months, to be exact) that he was asked on The Pat McAfee Show what he listens to during warmups.

The expected answer, I assume, would have been music. Skenes mentioned he listens to country.

But the factual answer came as a surprise when Skenes said....

AN AUDIOBOOK.

He hits triple digits when he pitches. His athletic prowess as a former catcher to an All-Star pitcher in 2024 should open people’s eyes to how he prepares mentally. It's much more than physicality that leads to his domination.

It goes to show you that there is no one way to prepare.

No one way to work on your mental game.

Music might be an adrenaline rush for some.

Audiobooks might calm others down.

Both might create a sense of flow, focus, and deliberate practice.

Do what works for you.
