Does it need another band aid?
I can't tell you how many band-aids I have seen thrown at problems in my day. I was with a company earlier in my career that was dying a death by 1000 cuts and 1 million band-aids.
I remember I was in a meeting with a half dozen executives and we were about to throw another band aid to a recurring problem... enough was enough. I had to speak up. Is this really how we should handle this?
Diagnosis the problem. We had spent zero time really thrashing the problem. The problem had many forms and 100 iterations, but basically the same thing over and over. It did not look like a heart attack, but it felt like a blockage or aneurysm could happen at any second that no one was looking for.
As we dug deeper, we could start to see rhyming pieces of the puzzle. Yes, a fix may have gotten the system up and running again, but not at maximum efficiency and chance of next breakdown around the next corner. The solution I was looking for was the root cause. Something that could prevent the failure from happening in the first place.
I know you have seen similar circumstances and probably preaching to the choir. We can do better and must insist we do better. Don't allow the simple diagnosis and band aid be the answer. Spend 15 minutes to possibly save a lifetime.
How do you handle diagnosing problems?
ITS URGENT... HELP!!!
Is it??? How does your hair on fire, always involve me. Their chaos travels. It can live with them 24/7/365... which is like pulling you down daily rabbit holes.
We are all fireman, putting out these urgent fires. I remember seeing a sign on a office door. YOUR LACK OF PLANNING DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY TO ME
Studies show, that one interuption to a deep quality work, can set you back 15-20 minutes... EVEN IF, that interuption was less than 1 minute...
It is a trap. A deep one at that. Yes, we want to help colleagues & clients. Yes, we are forced to help some higher ups with their "urgent" unplanned requests.
How many of these could have been avoided... almost all? More than we care to admit?
It is hard to put your foot down... even harder still to educate those repeat offenders.
Thanks for coming to me. Help me understand what happened, your goal for this request, your expectation and after I want to talk how we can diagnosis earlier in the process so it does not put some much stress on the team.
Don't just band aid it... or it will wreck your high performers. Find the root causes, the bad apples and plug some holes. How do you handle fires and urgent requests?
