Statutory paternity leave in the UK is a disgrace.
Two weeks of leave on less than £175 a week. That’s just not possible for many people, and it robs them of precious bonding time with their children.
The government’s response? Add on a tenner and give the ‘flexibility’ of splitting the leave into two one week chunks. As a father, I can’t fathom it. And it massively locks out mothers from options to return to work on their terms, often at a time of real momentum in their careers.
Nothing compares to the memories you make with your kids - and it takes longer than two weeks, I can tell you. That’s why at Woodrow even as a small company, paternity leave is 4 months, fully paid, which dads can take any time over two years.
I’m proud that we offer this, but frustrated that Woodrow is such an outlier.
Only 1 in 4 new dads have access to enhanced paternity leave or pay through their employer. We deserve change that goes much further, much sooner.
I’m glad the PR industry - a female majority sector - is now embracing shared parental leave too. This is about support for the whole family unit. Do not accept anything less - and challenge your leadership if they’re not making the right change. There’s no excuse.
