Highlights
I’m a middle-aged dad, so of course I have developed a love of learning about history. While I’d like to spend all my time diving into inches-thick tomes about the Revolutionary War and all the ensuing battles, I don’t always have the time.
I also happen to be a self-proclaimed casual gaming nerd. Luckily the tabletop industry has expanded the ways I can learn history with games about historical events and conflicts. How did I turn this into a fun and educational side project? Glad you asked!
Game development has always been a great way to test new tech. The Postcard Tactics project began as an experiment to learn the #Svelte front-end component framework. I began collaborating with subject matter experts and game designers to create digital versions of historically-themed postcard games.
A postcard game’s components fit within the layout of a standard-sized postcard to limit scope, complexity, and seat time - making them uniquely suited for educational purposes. Gamers learn about a historical event by playing through short scenarios that allow them to recreate or rewrite history. They quickly see the impact of their choices in a low-risk setting.
This tactic of breaking up learning into bite-sized pieces can be used to teach almost anything. And making the interaction fun can trick the user into learning without even knowing the learning is happening.
The Postcard Tactics project has expanded into a platform for launching and playing historically-based games. The portal currently hosts two titles, but more are on the way. Give them a try, and let me know what you think!
