Highlights
Took my first drive with Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) software version 12.3.4. It’s a level 2 safety system (which means the driver is 100% in charge and responsible), but it’s clear the Tesla AI team is leading us to an autonomous vehicle future.
I backed out of my garage, then engaged the software while I was in the alley behind my house. The software already knew I was going to Gigafactory Nevada, and started navigating. It handled stop signs, (cautiously), lane changes on city streets (probably better than me), freeways (no doubt better than me), 1 construction site, and 1 slowdown for traffic due to an accident on the freeway miles away. All without any issue.
I got to the guard gate, the car stopped, and I showed my badge to our security team. I was waved through, then the car kept driving. It went through another roundabout, and then took me directly to the lobby.
Our 2020 Model Y’s software upgraded over-the-air, with a solution that took me from the alley behind my house to the front door of Gigafactory Nevada. Without 1 disengagement of the software. I was responsible for the entire drive, but I did not take over once. 24 miles from midtown Reno to GFNV. Wild.
Remember that scene in Independence Day when Will Smith is driving the Alien spaceship, and the ship took over to drive to its mothership? Yea, that was my commute today (sans Jeff Goldblum and cigars).
Just 7.5% of car sales last year were Electric Vehicles (EVs), but 42% of car buyers overall said they will likely get an EV as their next car.
87% of Tesla owners said they will buy a Tesla as their next car.
It's the same feeling as when I got to work at Apple and the first iPhones were coming out. Everyone who bought one knew that their next phone would be an iPhone too.
I wonder what happens next.
