Highlights
I've been mostly off social media for the summer, and that's because my wife and I have been busy welcoming our newest member into the family!
I feel immensely fortunate that my role afforded me the rare opportunity to take leave. I'm so grateful that I had the chance to reflect on the 10 years I've spent in audio, and I feel that I arrived at some important conclusions during this time, that I wanted to share with you all.
JONATHAN'S FIVE TIME AWAY TAKE AWAYS:
1.) IT TAKES TIME
Time above all else is critical. You need to let all the noise clear out of your head and that can take WEEKS. I had to see projects come and go without me to feel clear about my own wants and needs as a creative person.
2.) URGENCY IS A TRAP
We frequently underpromise on vision and overpromise on results. This dynamic makes it really hard to see what the purpose of all your work is. I think this is one of the reasons it’s so hard to think long-term about your life and your career when your back is against the wall with deadlines and quarterly goals. And that was one of the things that they became really clear to me. I had enough time and space to think about it. We all need to spend a lot more time pondering what we want the next decade to look like, rather the next few months. And you CANT do that when the immediate needs outweigh everything else.
3.) WHEN YOUR MIND IS CLEAR, LOOK PAST THE CURRENT MOMENT
The people around you right now? They are circumstantial characters, background actors in the scene. The SCENE is what matters, and more important than the scene? The movie. What does the second and third act OF your movie look like for you, know what I mean? THAT’s the stuff that matters. Too often we let the interpersonal, emotional aspects of our working relationships be the things we chew on and preoccupy ourselves with. They won’t be there in 10 years. All that will remain is you and the work you've done. Will you be proud of what you're doing now...then?
- BOREDOM IS UNDERRATED
I find that a lot of my fixation of work-related problems comes from the low level anxiety it perpetuates. Just hanging out with my family on an uneventful day doesn’t have the same stakes… thank heavens! But what boredom does do is provide a bridge between what deepest needs and the life I’m currently living. Over this summer I really leaned into the uneventfulness of it all, and found that a deeper knowledge of my work’s purpose emerged.
- THE SOUL KNOWS
At a soul level we know what we want. It’s all the motivations that seem cloudy in the day-to-day pressures and anxieties that make life feel unclear, but you give yourself enough space you know. That's at least that’s how it’s felt for me.
I hope you found this helpful, those of you out there grinding out the work while trying to keep the end game in mind. This year promises to be the busiest, and importantly most meaningful, one for me yet, and I'm excited to share it all with you.
