So I watched the documentary #TheSocialDilemma last night on Netflix. Being in the technology industry I was already aware of many aspects they mentioned, but is was still very eye opening about the impact social media has on each of us by design and our society as a side effect. It is not about villainizing anyone using social media or those developing it, but we MUST understand how it is designed to keep our attention and the unintended consequences of that design. This is truly the leading cause of the ultra partisan nature of our society and how it is bringing out the worst in society. We have always been a nation with competing ideas, but for the most part we have been successful at navigating those differences to build a better union.

I think watching this documentary should be a requirement for everyone to have insight from the very people who built the social media we use today. Many good things have come from technology, but for all of us, we must find a better design to not destroy ourselves in the process. We are all vulnerable to being the worst of ourselves if we live in echo chambers, especially when we are not even aware that we are being munipulated and placed into an echo chamber in an effort to drive profit. You, your pre-teens, and teenagers should all watch.
