Highlights
It was an honour to be asked by Kevin Duncan to contribute a foreword to his 10th anniversary edition of The Diagrams Book.
As I’ve said often - and it’s exciting to now see set in print – there’s genius in ‘turning complexity into simplicity, in creating clarity and impact through ideas presented in shapes.’
I was introduced to Kevin by the sharp, smart and highly-connected Gavin Megaw, who knew I’d be inspired. Since then, I’ve shared Kevin’s work with teams, gifted it to colleagues and clients, and used it to shape my work.
Now, whenever there’s something tricky to process or distil, I dive in to get some stimulus or find a solution. From these 100 diagrams, I can always adopt or adapt a shape or flow and make an idea more memorable.
I also lean on another wise friend, who advised that some people tend to be visual and some more verbal – the trick is not just knowing both languages, but which to pick, when and to what effect.
Kevin’s approach is a vital tool and can make anyone a better communicator, more effective at shaping strategy and more able to present ideas.
I love the Bow Tie, Cultural Deadline and Three Buckets, in particular. With your own copy, you’ll soon have your own go-to set. I’d love to hear which.

Strong communication that showed class, charisma and great choreography today as Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool . The first knowledge of a huge story was delivered direct to the fans, the people who matter most in that moment - his players presumably already in the know from the morning’s training session. Despite big news breaking via the club’s in-house media, delivery was authentic, not sanitised or over-polished, and independent media were swiftly given their own opportunity to interrogate, develop the story, ask their own direct questions and hear an extra voice from the Club, in a press conference just a few hours later. It was an announcement that worked for club channels, social, digital, print and broadcast. And throughout, the manager was clear on his reason, consistent in his explanation and showed that there was still work to finish before his full legacy is marked at the season’s end. This surprise news was also delivered at the perfect time in the day, the right time of the week, and at a great time in the season with the club top of the Premier League, through to the first Cup Final of the season and still in the running in all four of Klopp’s competitions. That's no mean feat in sport. Choreography, class and charisma...and, in a game of margins, could it even give a performance edge?
