“I don’t need your permission for anything. I’m an adult, and you aren’t my father.”
Someone recently took something universally positive of mine and twisted it in an attempt to represent me negatively to others. More frustrating than the act was they never attempted to work with me through whatever issues they have.
When I was made aware (thank you to this awesome network), I reached out informing them I was aware of their actions and asked if we could speak directly about the situation. I received the above quoted response.
The jarring and unexpected situation and response were a potent reminder of some universal life lessons.
First, if you have an issue with someone, try to resolve it by going directly to that person and that person alone. Being a blindsided recipient of not, I’m experiencing how ignoring this uncomfortable but simple step destroys trust, ruins relationships, and creates an impossible mess to clean up.
Second, age and positional authority don’t automatically translate to trustworthiness, wisdom, and expertise. This individual was someone I once trusted, 25+ years my senior, and who holds a much higher position of authority than myself.
And, as final lesson, remember that as you assess someone’s capabilities and character, don’t wrongly assume they are qualified because it says so on paper. The capabilities and character of an individual are a complicated mix of their words, actions, and how they treat people around them, especially those they deem beneath them.
One of the things I hate more than anything is feeling restricted.
However, over the years, I've learned that healthy boundaries and reasonable guardrails are really positive things.
So, while it might not feel great when you bump up against them, they're worth it in the end.
