This past week, i rejoined my alma mater Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong as a alumnus volunteer on a project week to climb Low’s Peak in Kinabalu.
The students, many of whom had never climbed a proper mountain let alone one over 4000 meters tall, showed real mettle, curiosity and most importantly - humour! It was also great to spend time with Carl Fowler and Dr. Spencer A. F. - LPC is in very good hands.
Seeing an expedition through youthful eyes is also an opportunity for me to relearn lessons that enamoured me with expeditions in the first place:
- An expedition is a single unit, as fast as its slowest member. That’s fine.
- Leadership is sacrificing your own advantage, mental or physical strength, in the name of your team. When you help someone in a meangingful way at a low point, you win a kind of loyalty and trust hard to otherwise come by.
- No matter what, if you can smile, joke or make light of a tough situation - youll be fine.
- Getting to to the finish line doesnt matter, only the next step does. Relish in the minute wins.
- A bad moment is not a bad expedition, let alone a bad life. Press onwards, in good humour, and you’ll look back on adversity with fondness.
- In stressful moments, judge your present actions as you may view them in months from now, with a beer in hand and feeling relaxed and with the adversity behind you.
These are a few that come to mind, but of course there are more. Looking very much forward to my foray into West Papua later this year and inspires to resume my student expeditions, open to applications. Thank you again Carl and LPC, an extraordinary school.
