Great to join Andy Curtis FRSA and the UKRI Innovate team to talk about Immersive in the UK.
Sometimes confusing, Immersive covers anything with a headset and also the swathe up to video streaming including holograms, digital twins, 3D simulation and gaming across not just in the creative industries but education, health, retail and industry.
This sector is fueled by massive investments from the tech giants, but in the UK the sector is dominated by micro businesses who are punching above their weight in a global market that is growing fast.
How can we support this sector better? We talked about showcasing and education, more collaboration, scaling our ambition and closer support.
Great to be back in the North East, in the shadow of the mighty Tyne and Gateshead’s Baltic and Sage.

Farming is in the news with protests across Europe, including at home here in the UK this past week. Our farmers are struggling to make a living in our current market environment, let alone whilst also delivering to our environmental targets #getfairaboutfarming.
Smart farming is an interesting topic in this context. Smart farms rely on a vast amount of data, harvested using artificial intelligence (AI) and remote operations, to help farmers boost yields, reduce resource consumption, and cut costs as well as potentially mitigating the environmental impact of agriculture. However, they require expansive networks that enable connectivity in rural areas, which underscores the crucial importance of improving internet access.
Farming communities, even in the most remote locations, need reliable, high-capacity coverage. Farms in the EU use 173 million hectares of land for agricultural production and account for 39 percent of the total land area of the EU. One solution lies in 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), which can often provide connectivity faster and at a lower cost than fiber.
Smart farming best practices include the use of sensors, GPS and AI to navigate fields and target specific areas, making intelligent decisions and acting with precision – for example, identifying plants in need of water and actuating irrigation there. This is called precision agriculture.
We have worked on a number of pilots, monitoring soil quality in Turkey and Morocco, working to protect bee colonies in Sweden and reducing posticide use in Ireland.
How will your business and industry contribute to that journey today and in the future?
