I just lost my 94 year old mother, so this design challenge around an ageing population and social isolation in Japan, where I've just spent two weeks, struck a chord.

In Japan in the first half of 2024, 4000 elderly people lived and died alone and were not found for over a month after their death.

130 people in the same period were found to have been dead for over a year before being missed and found. (Source: BBC Global News & Japanese Police, 30 Aug 2024).

What kind of policy, social, and community service design challenge does this pose?

Who should be held to account to avoid these numbers rising as the population continues to age rapidly?

What if we would tackle this challenge using, perhaps, relational and kinship-like approaches vs linear or policy-led ones? Could those help?
