After nearly 4 years, last week marked the end of my time at TIER Mobility. It was a true rollercoaster ride, the most fulfilling experience of my career to date - the opportunity to build up an extraordinarily talented Central Operations team from scratch and to lead it through periods of hyper-growth, pandemic, and latterly industry consolidation is one that comes along rarely. In particular, I’d like to thank Andreas Weinberger for bringing me onboard and being a fantastic mentor throughout my time here.
TIER’s mission will continue, and I’ll remain an ardent supporter (and customer). The headwinds facing the micro-mobility industry are enormous - some self-inflicted, but mostly it is well-intentioned but overzealous and inequitable regulation which poses the greatest threat to this nascent industry. For the sake of quality of life in our cities - ridding them of the scourge of the automobile and their accompanying pollution, inefficient use of public space, and death & injury (‘Carmaggedon’ by Daniel Knowles a fascinating holiday read of how we allowed this to happen) - it must succeed.
As for me, a new adventure awaits soon, but not before a couple of weeks in Bordeaux and Nantes at the Rugby World Cup - the former a fantastic example of a well-regulated & highly-utilised e-scooter scheme which enabled hundreds of fans to reach the Stade de Bordeaux while the local tram network buckled under the weight of heat and inadequate capacity.
