How do you measure success? Is it the D1 scholarship offer, the starting varsity position maybe the value you bring to the team? This is my son who plays varsity basketball for a team that finished 7th out of seven teams in region 6A. Overall there was only two teams in the entire state with a worse record, in 6A. When that season ended I could, as a proud father, count six-point guards that I would start before my son. That number today is 1. Last season he suffered a busted nose, he bit through his cheek and still never wanted to give up. We had to have him benched for one game, doctors’ orders, and missing one game was devastating. He doesn’t look at the other players as competitors, he only looks at himself. He hit the gym like Mat Fraser before the Cross Fit Games. He put up hundreds of shots every day, except Sunday, or least most Sundays. When he stepped back on the court this fall, he was a different student athlete. Bigger, stronger, more proficient at his craft and much more confident.   I’m not sure any player has played more minutes than he has, in the first two varsity games and he is not a starter.  In the last game he hit a three in the final seconds of the game to put his team up, moments later the other team scored. The game came down to one final shot by his team and his teammate drained it. As a parent I can see how he has succeeded, his process to that the success is one all successful people have followed.  No matter how improbable success looks, one option is to keep climbing, keep pushing, and enjoy the grind. I can’t tell you how many times he expressed that he owed it to the team to put forth every ounce of energy to make himself better, so that his team would be better. How do you measure success? For my son if it was a D1 scholarship or a starting spot on the varsity team he would have failed. Success isn’t always winning or making the sale. Sometimes it’s who I have become after the effort.  Art Berg, once said, “while difficult takes time the impossible just takes a little longer”. I can’t always control the outcome, but I can control my effort. No doubt effort has its own reward. #team #success #grit #effort #sales
