Was thinning out my library yesterday and figured this book was a good candidate for donation. It tells the story of Li & Fung, a multinational supply chain manager. I last read it in 2009, when the company I co-founded was a high-value contributor to a global supply chain. At the time, I was trying to figure out how to avoid being “supply chained” (as in, “Hey, suppliers, how about offering the same level of service for 50% less? We’ve set a 20% growth target this year. We don’t need to be more efficient, but you sure do!”)   As is my practice, I thumbed through the pages before discarding. A couple of phrases caught my eye, e.g., “network orchestration,” “thick connections,” “big–small company.” Terms that ring of #complexity and #systemsthinking. Terms that represent principles that one would think would amplify a company’s agility and ability to scale.   I did a quick search on Li & Fung and found that the company has been struggling, almost since the 2008 publication of the book. In 2020 they were de-listed from the Hong Kong stock exchange and taken private, with one article attributing the downfall to lack of innovation and failure to adapt.   Whenever I work with a client, I always ask myself, “What more is going on here than meets the eye?” On the surface, the company has a lot going for it: apparently well thought-through succession and governance, an approach that seems to take complexity into account. What’s happening?   I’m going to give this book another read, this time not through the lens of #supplychain but instead through the lenses of #complexity, #systemsthinking, #esg, #familybusiness, and more. I’ll be looking for principles that if followed, in theory, should “guarantee” success. And yet.   It’s never just one thing, is it?
