‘Surprising and super cool.’ Quantum algorithm offers faster way to hack internet encryption
30 years ago, Peter Shor developed an algorithm that can break the symmetric encryption the world uses every day. The algorithm needs a quantum computer - a big one.
New York University computer scientist Oded Regev has published a breakthrough algorithm that could substantially reduce the size of the quantum computer needed to break encryption.
Regev’s algorithm would only require n^1.5 gates instead of Shor's n^2. Next month Regev will give a colloquium talk on his new algorithm.
Cryptographers, though, are already considering Regev's breakthrough as a sign of things to come. China is investing (publicly) $15.3B in quantum computing, and the U.S., $1.9B.
Patero provides a crypto module (software) that works to both Cloak network endpoints and Future-Safe data in motion with NIST's quantum-safe encryption algorithms.

China committed $15.3B to quantum computing development for 2021 through 2025 - It looks like some of that investment is yielding results. Not a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) - but one more rung on the ladder...
