Alright. I’m gonna give y’all the AI rant and I expect folks won’t love it.
Thanks to our winner 🙋♀️ Eleanor M. For suggesting “something something AI.”
Hilariously LinkedIn suggested I let AI draft this post. I declined which, spoiler alert, is going to be on brand for this post.
I find AI disturbing across the board. I’m somewhat fascinated by its “inevitability” however. Large language models which power what people are calling AI only exist because countless human hours of creativity, knowledge sharing, and ingenuity were scraped from the internet without approval.
Tools like midjourney stole artists work and spit out derivative pixel arrangements for those without the earned ability to create them ourselves. And every bit of information held in all of these tools came from a person. They only work because they’ve harvested enough information from people who will never be compensated. They’re built on an unethical foundation.
Yet still we are marching towards these tools being baked into everything. Because tech needs a new thing to saturate our lives with. All of these companies could simply say no to AI but they won’t because they risk falling behind to the ones who won’t say no. Just another shitty piece of the future no one asked for that benefits very few and makes things worse for many more.
I don’t love it, but I don’t love capitalism either, and yet here I am. We all have things to take care of. I won’t shame anyone for working at a tech company that is working to build AI into their products. I do wish the AI companies themselves would disappear tho.
