Highlights
What’s the biggest mistake to avoid in the onboarding process?
The most critical mistake is to IGNORE IT.
Disregarding the onboarding process, or treating it as unimportant, is a recipe for failure.
If you neglect to prepare and properly integrate a new team member, you’re essentially setting them up to fend for themselves, which can significantly undermine their potential and value.
Let me be clear: I’m passionate about this topic because ignoring onboarding can be detrimental. You’ve invested in this new hire, and they’re eager to contribute. If they’re not effectively integrated, their potential and enthusiasm will diminish, impacting both their own success and the organization’s overall performance.
A successful onboarding process requires a well-thought-out plan and careful attention. It’s not just about welcoming a new employee, it’s about setting them up for success and ensuring they can hit the ground running. Both the individual and the organization will benefit from a structured, supportive onboarding experience.

"You cannot sweep the stairs by starting with the first step."
This French proverb struck me deeply, especially after spending a few years in Quebec, anything French naturally piques my interest.
Imagine standing at the base of a staircase. Sure, you can start sweeping that first step and get it spotless. But the moment you move to the second step, all the dirt from above falls down, undoing your progress. What kind of progress is that?
The lesson here is clear: you have to start at the top.
In leadership, this means aligning, organizing, and clarifying from the highest levels. It’s about ensuring that the vision, purpose, and alignment at the top are crystal clear because everything flows down from there. Without this clarity, any efforts to clean up the steps below are ineffective.
This concept is what Peter Stewart, PhD and I often refer to as the "waterfall effect." You can’t effectively address issues at the lower levels without first taking care of what’s happening at the top. Only then can you truly clean and organize the entire staircase—your entire organization.
Take a moment to reflect: Are you starting at the top? Are you ensuring that your organization’s vision and goals are clear and aligned before addressing the challenges below?
