Darren Sudman is the co-founder and former CEO of Simon's Heart, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac arrest and death in children, teens, and young adults.12 He founded the organization with his wife Phyllis in 2005 after the sudden death of their three-month-old son, Simon, due to an undetected heart condition called Long QT Syndrome.13

Darren is a frequent speaker on sudden cardiac death in students and heart screenings. He and his wife have been recognized by various media outlets and organizations for their work with Simon's Heart.12
As of January 2025, Darren had opened a new business and started a new career in 2021, indicating a shift in his professional focus.4 However, he remains involved with Simon's Heart as a board member.5
Darren and Phyllis met at The Ohio State University and currently reside in Plymouth Meeting, PA, with their two children, Sally and Jaden.12

For me, it's the human stories. Sure, I am awe-struck by the athletic prowess of Olympians, but, the tenacity and ability to overcome adversity is so damn inspiring. It seems like every athlete has a compelling backstory.
Dana Vollmer-Grant is the perfect example. Despite being diagnosed with a heart condition and believing that any practice, workout or meet could result in cardiac arrest, Dana never wavered. Her family followed her everywhere with an automated external defibrillator in tow. As a result, Dana went on to win seven Olympic medals.
We worked together on a public service announcement for student athletes. Simon's Heart was the beneficiary in this Speedo cause marketing campaign. We even went to Seventeen Magazine together for an interview. Don't act surprised!
Dana and so many of these Olympians, medals or not, represent the best in athletics and the best of humanity.
I love this photo and I'm glad it will be shared this Thursday at the 2023 Faces of Philanthropy Awards hosted by the Philadelphia Business Journal.
For well over a decade, ERT, now Clario, has been supporting Simon's Heart by providing electrocardiogram machines for youth heart screenings. It also donates used equipment so Simon's Heart can get the equipment into the hands of other screening organizations. It is safe to say that over 10,000 students have been screened using their devices.
I am so incredibly grateful for this sustaining and authentic partnership. I believe it is a shining example of how a company can leverage the same assets it uses to make a profit to help a cause in a meaningful way. It creates a collective sense of purpose. I feel and see it every time I'm in the room or on a call with our friends at Clario.
