New chapter begins!

I'm super happy to share that I've officially joined the team at Alma as Video Marketing Manager. It's still new, but the people here feel like fast friends and collaborators. From my initial screening through onboarding, everyone has been incredibly kind, talented, and optimistic about what's to come. I'm so grateful for the opportunity, and stoked about what we'll do together.

Special thanks to Kevin Doherty, Sarah Malis, LMSW, and the rest of the Alma team, who made the interview process awesome and have welcomed me with open arms.

It's a great mission and a great team. Proud to be here.

The job hunt is exhausting... but we got this.

I don’t post on here as much as I should. Probably a mix of worried pride and the introvert in me wanting to solve things privately. However, it’s time.

Unfortunately, like so many others, I was affected by a round of layoffs a few months ago. Since then, I’ve applied to dozens of roles, sent loads of emails / DMs, and have tried knocking on as many different doors as possible. Throughout this process, I’ve learned at least 4 things.

  1. It’s not you.

Losing a job feels personal. But if you can take a second to breathe and look around, you’ll see you’re swimming in a pool with droves of other people treading water just like you.

After the lay off, I found myself relitigating old workplace disagreements about direction or objectives. But all of that is useless. It happened. The company restructured. The team changed. It is whatever it is. What it’s not… is you. You have to stay focused on where you are, what you offer, and where you want to go.

  1. Grief is real.

This is a break up. You got broken up with. Especially if you’ve been with an org through serious growth and team bonding, this is super real. You’ll grieve the loss of coworkers and of routines. Let yourself feel that. Take it in, process it, and do what you can to redefine yourself while keeping in touch with people you don’t want to lose.

  1. Time is fast

When you’re scrolling through endless lists of open roles and firing off multiple apps a day or week, time slips away. Monday becomes next Monday becomes next month. Feels like I lost my job last week, when really it’s been over 3 months of tireless work. However, it's important work and you have to stay consistent.

But... that time is also representative of your life. You have to carve out a balance for social interaction, sunlight, exercise, and sleep. Life is still happening. Treat the job hunt with respect and focus, but give yourself the same. You deserve it. Everyone deserves it.

  1. We all need help.

This is the hardest one and I’m only beginning to learn it. I want to believe I can write a nice cover letter, fill out an app, submit it online all neat and tidy, and somehow my phone will ring. But I don’t think that’s how it’s going to work. The only in-roads I’ve had so far are from generous people connecting me with other generous people.

Be vulnerable. People surprise you. Also, it’s super refreshing to talk to someone who’s enthusiastic about you and your potential.

Anyway, I don’t mean to preach. I certainly have no soapbox to stand on. But if you’re in the same boat, I hope this helps a little.

This is me working on #4. If anyone's looking for Creative Project Management or Brand Storytelling, I’m #opentowork and excited to join a team focused on producing awesome content. I’m thankful for everything I learned at Density, and even more grateful for the incredible people I got to work alongside. Now I’m ready for the next thing.

Good luck, y’all.
