Career
- Early Career: Clunie began his career as a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, working on commercial litigation and pro-bono cases involving voting rights, police-community relations, and other social justice issues. He also clerked for the Honorable Cynthia M. Rufe in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.145
- Obama Administration: He served as Deputy Associate Counsel at the White House from 2010 to 2012 and was part of President Obama’s 2008 campaign legal team in Iowa. Clunie was also the Executive Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury under Secretary Jacob J. Lew, where he played a crucial role in policy coordination and supported initiatives on financial capability, financial inclusion, and community development.145
- JPMorgan Chase & Co.: Before joining BEA, Clunie was a managing director at JPMorgan Chase & Co., leading the firm’s engagement with public policymakers and focusing on workforce development, financial health, small business expansion, and community development. Black Economic Alliance
- Clunie served as the Executive Director of the Black Economic Alliance from March 2020 to January 2023. During his tenure, he expanded the organization's influence and profile, raised millions of dollars for endorsed candidates, and mobilized business leaders to advocate for voting rights. He also played a key role in launching transformational programming to accelerate Black business ownership and securing historic legislation to invest in Black businesses and communities.246
Current Role
- After leaving BEA, Clunie joined Edward Jones as a General Partner and Head of Community Relations in February 2023. In this role, he is responsible for activating and operationalizing the firm’s purpose through thought leadership, partnerships, and strategic deployment of resources to promote inclusive growth and financial strength.345
