More user, data & process management capabilities coming to SimScale!
Over the past months, the number of broad simulation roll-outs we worked on increased a lot. The bottleneck we solve for in most engineering teams is that design decisions are made in the BU while analysis is typically a corporate function.
There are different versions of and many nuances to this organizational design, but at the core it’s always very similar and it makes sense: A traditional desktop simulation stack comes with a lot of complexity (methods development and governance, HPC provisioning, data and IT management, prohibitive licensing etc.) which often leaves no other choice than taming this complexity by centralizing it.
See below for an example of an automotive 6 phase inverter: Traditionally, during NPD or vehicle program work, the BU would request the simulation function to validate several different performance characteristics to ensure a spec conforming design. Some of those sims require significant computational horsepower (e.g. CHT incl. Joule heating, liquid cooling and radiation or Modal-based harmonics).
This causes the ‘simulation lead time’ issue: Program engineers are complaining about long wait times which compromise RFQ response quality or put project milestones at risk. All while the simulation team’s backlog is growing with repetitive simulation tasks instead of developing the new sim methods.
With the required user, data, process & HPC management capabilities integrated, a cloud-native stack allows to deploy these simulations as templates broader while still maintaining central governance. The simulation team proves the method to then publish it along with the standard product development procedures.
The result is not just acceleration of the existing design-simulation loops but also the deeper exploration of the design space, since designs get simulated that previously would have never been sent to the sim team.
We’re incorporating many of the real-world learnings in SimScale’s user, data & process management capabilities. We shipped several improvements to user management last quarter and a major release on process management is upcoming as well.
If you’re wondering how such an approach to templating and deploying simulations looks like, we’d love to show you around!

“The adoption of SimScale has allowed us to validate our solutions internally with considerable savings in terms of time and costs.” - an excerpt from the latest SimScale success story with GV Filtri in a row of new case studies, all show-casing industrial equipment engineering teams.
Extensive customization, small batches, hazardous field conditions and expensive testing have been long standing challenges in industrial equipment design. More recently, higher expectations for sustainability, energy efficiency and truly global competition added to the mix.
More than ever, teams engineering industrial equipment need to find ways to bring higher performing and more sustainable products to market faster, while not sacrificing quality and lifetime or even risking warranty issues in the field. That drives the need to accelerate engineering velocity, find winning product designs faster and get it the "first time right".
A cloud-native sim stack helps these teams to deploy simulation ‘into the loop’ such that project engineers no longer need to rely solely on centralized teams or external providers; instead, they can virtually validate design decisions and explore alternatives themselves, while simulation experts maintain oversight, method development, and quality control.
