If you Can't Get Employed, be the Employer
Dr UX / Product Designers with an entrepreneurial spirit, there's still a significant opportunity to support underserved small businesses in their digital transformation journey. Many businesses have yet to embrace modern marketing strategies, lead generation, or digital product development.
To tap into this market, engage with small business groups, attend local events, and network within your community (don't network with other designers so much, go to events where designers are needed!).
Offer your expertise in website design, light CRM integration, lead generation funnels, and customer communication strategies. Help them pick between WordPress, Webflow or Framer - help them setup Google Analytics (many for the first time)... serve their immediate needs, and see if it leads more directly into Product Design or UX work ♥️.
By helping these businesses evolve, you not only gain valuable experience but also establish meaningful connections that could lead to future opportunities (referrals!). Remember, even if it's not a perfect fit, every positive interaction is a potential referral down the line.
The digital landscape is evolving rapidly, and there's a wealth of untapped potential waiting to be explored. Stay proactive, stay engaged, and seize the opportunities that come your way. Don't be afraid of "unsexy industries", I'd say follow the need, while you are following the money. Best of luck in your endeavors!
I started directing a remote web agency on behalf of a client today. The agency is located in the Philippines (I'm of Filipino descent if you didn't know), so asynchronous video feedback (along with a Kan Ban board - hello Trello) will be key as we nail down SEO, redirects, link structures, features and of course design. Loom, I'm looking at you kid!
