Then, I thought them cheap. Now, I see responsibility. I’m thinking about the workforce cuts across our networks and reflecting on lessons learned from my parents’ management style.
They came to Canada with little. Packed key possessions from Vietnam to set on the danger filled journey by sea. They lost all belongings to pirate robberies by the time we arrived at the Pulao Bidong Refugee Camp.
I wore hand-me-downs and received pre-owned Barbie dolls as gifts growing up. I begged for LA Gears and instead, wore LA Gares.
I was scolded for a poor attitude. And taught to be grateful for the next best we could afford.
Those memories turned to lessons, and I share three that I see parallels for us organization leaders.

My dad earned the most and my mom protected it vigilantly. They taught me about how to prioritize spend and how to monitor it carefully.
Company leaders must be seen as optimistic and adventurous about the future. They also must act with caution in spending when earnings decline.

We dined out from time to time, so we weren’t deprived of little luxuries. Value was placed high though. If we could enjoy the same quality foods for less, that’s where we would go even if environment suffered a bit.
And absolutely no ordering drinks. My dad explained those extra one to two dollars per person could be another meal for another day.
‘Drink the tea,’ he’d say, ‘you can have coke when you get home.’
There were no separate standards either. My parents had only free tea too.
Leaders must make a choice between the extras or to save for darker days. It’s hard, and it’s absolutely necessary.
➖ᴅɪꜱᴄᴇʀɴ ᴅᴇᴍᴀɴᴅꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ꜱᴛᴀɴᴅ ꜱᴛʀᴏɴɢ ᴀɢᴀɪɴꜱᴛ ᴛᴀɴᴛʀᴜᴍꜱ➖
I remember 15 year old me in Dufferin Mall, when I exclaimed I needed a Roots backpack.
I whined that other kids had it.
I exclaimed that I brought home great grades so I deserved it. I threatened to quit school to get a job and buy it myself.
My mom looked at me calmly and firmly said, ‘we won’t be able to buy the Roots bag today.’
Leaders get pulled from many to open their wallets. It’s hard to say not now, and that’s the job of a data driven and responsible leader.
⏩ Years later, my parents stabilized. They saved enough to buy a home. We travelled. They gifted us things to our hearts desire. They continue to be incredibly generous because they can without pressure.
🙌🏼 Every now and then, my mom shares the guilt she carried back then in saying no. To me, that’s incredible strength. She placed our family’s ability to survive above mine and each of our personal needs. I admire her leadership.
Sharing these learnings as I see the severity and widening rounds of jobs lost around us. I wonder if we have lost some discipline in managing our appetites and risks for growth.
#ShiningLight on the #leadership lessons I now appreciate from my parents’ sacrifices.
