Why should academics/faculty/lecturers/instructors be on LinkedIn? I strongly recommend it as an easy way of keeping in touch with former students. I get a TON of JOY from seeing how students I used to chat with all the time are now getting summer internships, moving through careers, and just rolling on and rising through life. I'm honestly sad that I dismissed LinkedIn for too long and missed the chance to stay connected with some of the students I treasured teaching at U of Oregon, and from my first few years of academic advising. Another advantage: since it's a professional site, the boundaries are built in, so the bar for connecting is much lower than for more personal social media. It's totally fine if your current students connect with you even while you are still teaching them, and it's not weird for you to initiate a connection with a few you really got to know, even before they graduate.
