Highlights
“Deniz, you’ll go to the client tomorrow and say yes to everything they ask, even if you know the answer is no.” (Ali Parsa - Babylon CEO - September 2017)
That was the last time Ali spoke to me.
It was 4-5 months into my time at Babylon.
He stopped speaking to me because I said no.
For the first time in my life I had to say an unequivocal no to a boss, as fulfilling the request felt more “costly” to me across multiple dimensions.
3-4 more months later, in November 2017, the moment I secured myself the right to work in any company in the UK (independent of Babylon), I quit. - With no job lined up, and mental health needing some attention :)
Flash back to the start of the story:
My first few weeks were in their Rwanda office (Babyl as it was known in Rwanda) and in addition to being responsible for internationalising their core UK product, I was also the product owner of their Rwanda product back then.
Visiting hospitals in and around Kigali, talking to patients, you could see how such a tech and business model, adapted really well to local conditions (e.g. with delivery via simple feature-phones) could make (and was already starting to make) a great impact. ❤️
And that’s what really hooked my heart to Babylon’s mission from the start on. - Just like it was the case with many of my fellow “Babylonians.”
All in all, I quit Babylon with part of my heart left behind.
I wish the story was different.
