ChartMogul just released the second edition of their SaaS Growth Report, and one thing in particular caught my eye.

Unsurprisingly, there's quite a wide delta with regards to growth as VC-backed companies consistently outpaced bootstrapped companies. At some point this becomes a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, as more growth begets more funding, and it's harder for bootstrapped businesses to keep up with their VC-backed peers.

However, what stood out to me were the retention figures, both customer and net revenue retention (NRR). The margin there between bootstrapped and VC-backed companies was much narrower, and it was great to see in the data what we've been experiencing through our portfolio companies as we go up against larger VC-backed competitors.

It feels like the playing field is much more even when it comes to retention. Regardless of how you closed that customer, it's now up to you to deliver a product and service that is compelling enough for them to stay on and to continue spending $ with you. I would guess that most would be able to generate a $1 in sales if you gave them $2, but you can't subsidize customer spend forever and at some point what you are selling needs to be the reason why they stay. That's where execution is the difference maker, where the amount of funding has less of an impact (although not zero impact), and why I think those metrics are so much closer.

As a sidenote, I also wonder why ChartMogul cut their data into "<$1M" and "$1M -$30M" in ARR. I would have loved to have seen finer segments, like $1M - $5M, $5M - $10M, etc.

SaaS Capital's most recent retention benchmark presentation had this chart that caught my eye. 2023 was the year revenue growth and profit growth trends flipped.

Investors still rewarded top-line growth, of course, but investors also started paying up for companies that could demonstrate profit growth, after years of punishing that sort of behavior.

Without any dramatic changes to the overall macro environment, specifically any loosening on strategic M&A outcomes, I would expect more companies to demonstrate they actually "flip a switch" and go into the black to make themselves more appealing to financial buyers
