Wordle Wizardry: How Five Letters Changed the New York Times 📰

I recently came across an interesting chart which showed that by December 2023, the majority of global time spent within official New York Times apps was in NYT Games, marking a notable transformation in user behavior.

It would not be farfetched to say that this shift was catalyzed by the acquisition of Wordle in 2022. The popular word game brought tens of millions of new users to the New York Times (NYT), significantly expanding its digital audience. Notably, in 2023, the NYT introduced Connections, which quickly became its second-most-popular game after Wordle.

The NYT monetization strategy leverages a mix of free and subscription-based games alongside its traditional news offerings. Wordle remains free to play, serving as an entry point to attract users. This strategy aims to funnel players towards paid subscriptions, either for more games or to convert them into news readers.

The company has found that subscribers engaging with both news and games have the strongest long-term retention rates. This insight has led to a focus on bundled subscriptions, offering "All Access" packages that include games, news, and other lifestyle products like NYT Cooking.

By expanding its digital portfolio to focus on games, the NYT is focused on retaining existing subscribers and attracting new ones, highlighting the critical role games now play in the Times' digital strategy.

I’ve consciously dedicated more time and effort this year to improving my quality of life. One area that I’ve been focusing on is how to build stronger mental resilience when dealing with problems 💚

Through speaking with folks and readings there is a common theme I’ve noticed which has helped me so far and it's rather simple:

Our problems are not special 👑

There is a tendency to see our problems as unique or extraordinary when in fact they are actually very common. Unfortunately, this often leads to a sense of entitlement and we may start believing that we deserve special treatment or that the world owes us something.

I’ve definitely had my fair share of moments when I thought my problems were special. And this has led to challenges in acceptance, victim mentality or focusing my energy on the wrong things instead of moving forward.

So now I try to remove any unnecessary labels I may have previously attached to myself and frame the problem I am facing in a very ordinary way e.g. I am a person trying to achieve this 🙂

Of course being aware of this doesn’t suddenly make all of life's problems seem trivial but I find it helps me centre myself and improve my mental well-being. Hopefully those reading this will find some value in it as well 🌈
